The red oak and the white pine stood tall naked under the pewter fall skies
The tawny and verdant leaves that once it wore with pride were long dissolved in oblivion
And what was left behind were a few shades of gray
this time even the winter evaded the wilderness,
for there was no shower of dusty snow,
the feathery white snowflakes that once used to shroud the fauna were nowhere to be found
Yet the elm and the birch stood defiant and unperturbed,
for the long awaited spring was about to come
