Paid Nuisance

After possessing most luxuries in life,
now when I come to think of it
is nothing but a paid nuisance.
If you don’t believe me read on

The phone,
which tracks me down
even during my vacation time

The laptop,
the concept of work hours
now exists no more

The car, the house,
chained me in loan and mortgages,
making me to work some more

And the life which was in blithe,
carefree like a bird
not too long ago,
has become the most desirable possession in life.

The irony remains
we work even harder
so that we can buy
that long lost life
in old age
when there will be no life
left in this so called ostensible life

  1. This is so TRUE! Can’t agree more…..feels like we have set our lives out to be a punishment — starting with childhood — lkg, ukg…..education, exams, competition — and then all through with work, juggling family/health/rest —– is this the sign of progress? Achievement? Wisdom? Thank you for raising your voice and shining light!

  2. Absolutely true words ringing in Shantanu. It’s an irony of life….a viscous circle we can’t seem to come out of . Miss good olds days of carefree life where contentment ruled supreme!

  3. Very true: we are stuck in that cycle and cannot retire until there is little time to enjoy it. Messages for our children are hard to formulate.

  4. This is so true. We are constantly and consistently in a rush, in a run- to ear, to live, to play, to eat, even to vacation. All resulting in lack of actually enjoying and living.

  5. These lines are very true. We dig and dig and dig for a better life, and ‘luxurious living’, as you said, when it is staring right in our eyes.

  6. This is beautifully written, Shantanu😊. So much truth in it! We are all prisoners of our wants and we find it difficult to get out of that vicious cycle!

  7. True that! I remember when I was in Kashmir say around 2012 I was completely cut off from mobile. I just had my family and the nature around me and trust me it was such a peaceful and perfect trip. That rarely happens now with network everywhere🙈

  8. Such is the irony of life, we are running for the luxuries to be enjoyed and savored in the last years of our life when there will be not so much life left to enjoy. Enjoy every moment as the last.
